Mayo Clinic Nutritionist, Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. has proposed the question if drinking diet soda everyday is harmful. What Zeratsky concludes is drinking a can or two daily isn’t likely to hurt you. The chemicals and artificial sweeteners used in diet soda are safe for most people and there is no credible evidence of these substances causing cancer. But, what you should know is diet soda is not considered a “health drink” or a silver bullet for weight loss. Although it may save you calories-there are studies that suggest drinking more than one soda a day-regular or diet- may increase the risk of obesity and related health problems such as type 2 diabetes.
Zeratsky encourages starting your day with a small glass of 100% fruit juice, drinking skim milk with meals and consistently sipping on water throughout the day. Try making diet soda an occasional treat rather than an everyday staple.
